Choosing the Right Laptop for You

12 Mar

As laptops have developed over the years there have been many more companies designing and building them to keep up with the already competitive desktop market. Laptops offer a different kind of physical versatility that the same tower or all-in-one desktop machines can’t offer. However, a different kind of physical structure means you’re looking at a different kind of purchase. So how do you know what you want in your laptop?
Let’s forget about the system specs for a minute. If you know your computers, you know what’s good and what’s not. Most people use laptops as backup machines for travel and out-of-office work. So what do you want to be keeping in mind when you go shopping for your laptop?
1: Screen Size
Make sure you go and see the laptop you are interested in in person before you decided to buy it. If you can, try it out on your lap. The shape and size of the laptop is going to make a big difference in how you are able to carry it around.
2: Keyboard/Mouse
Unlike all-in-ones or towers, you’re stuck with the same mouse and keyboard that is integrated into the computer. Make absolutely sure you are okay with the setup before you buy. Open up a word processor, do some web browsing that involves lots of clicking (if available).
3: Find out what kind of external ports it has, and what you need
This is another important thing about a laptop that is meant to be carried around: On a desktop machine you can just plug things in and let it sit there on your desk. Laptops aren’t designed for lots of externals unless it has its own permanent  place somewhere (in which case: why didn’t you just get a desktop machine?). So if you are finding it lacking the necessary inputs, you may consider looking at a differet make/model.
